LESSON REFLECTIONS AND NOTES:

Dequency to Scott

This sounds like a great activity for students to get to know the stock market. Have you thought of having the students play the stock market? You can have them buy and sell stocks along with justify why they bought and sold those stocks. I know that in high school subjects are departmentalized. Do you work with teams? If so, I was thinking it would be easier to teach with specific themes in mind. Good luck!

Scott to Dequency
I do have students participate in an online stock market simulation. They are grouped in groups of three to four students and they get to invest $100,000. I do make them justify what stocks they have bought and give a report to the class.

Heather to Scott
It is great that you are using many different ways of presenting the information to your students in that you are having a discussion, handouts, videos, and it will be hands-on through the use of computers as well. Learning about the stock market and the government's involvement is such a valuable lesson to be learned, especially in today's current situation. This is definitely a real world kind of assignment that students can relate to or at least find relevant to their everyday lives because of our current economic crisis. It sounds like your students are receiving a very realistic and meaningful education in economics based upon this lesson and that they participate in an online stock market stimulation. An extension of this lesson can be to have a debate amongst your students about your discussion of whether politicians should regulate the stock market and whether they should have to show what stocks they purchase. Good luck!

Heather to Scott

I might be missing something, but what are your students writing about in their papers? I know the topic is stocks but what are they supposed to write about specifically? Is it supposed to be about their experience with researching the stocks and with the simulation or is it a research paper about what stocks are? I really like your idea of having a simulation for students because it makes it more realistic, which will help them understand the idea better. I remember in high school we had to do the "stock project" over Christmas break. I can't even remember what I had to do, but I do remember I was miserable and did not even truly understand what I was doing. I think a simulation would have helped me because I would have actually saw what it means to buy or sell stocks and all the details that go along with it. Lastly, your rubric is very straightforward and fair sounding!

Good luck,
Heather
